Cluequill Privacy Policy

Effective: October 19, 2026. Publisher: Front Porch Puzzle Press ("we").

Cluequill is a Google Docs™ add-on that makes printable puzzles (word searches, crosswords, fill-ins, word scrambles, sudoku and cryptograms, each with an answer key) from the words you type into its sidebar, and inserts them into the document you have open. It runs entirely inside Google Apps Script and your browser under your Google account. We do not operate a server for Cluequill, and no document content or puzzle words are ever sent to us.

Google user data Cluequill accesses

The document you open it in, and only that document (Google scope https://www.googleapis.com/auth/documents.currentonly): Cluequill finds where your cursor is and inserts the puzzle there as ordinary paragraphs and tables. It does not read the rest of your text. It cannot open, list or read any other file in your Google Drive™.
Permission to show its menu item and sidebar inside Google Docs™ (scope script.container.ui). This gives no access to data.

Cluequill does not access your name, email address, contacts, Gmail, Calendar or any other Google account data, and it does not request permission to connect to outside services.

How Cluequill uses Google user data

The only thing Cluequill does with your document is the one thing you ask for: when you press "Insert puzzle into document", it adds the puzzle and its answer key at the cursor (starting a new page if needed). The puzzle itself is built in the sidebar from the words you typed there. Cluequill does not read your document in the background, does not keep a copy of it, and does not use it for any other purpose: no advertising, no analytics, no profiling, no building of user databases, and no training or improving of AI or machine-learning models (generalized or otherwise).

How Google user data is stored

Document content is not stored by Cluequill anywhere. The only change to your document is the puzzle you inserted, which you can remove like any other text.
Your Pro license key, if you enter one, is kept in Apps Script user properties, stored by Google in your own Google account. We have no access to it.
Error reports. If an insert fails, Google Apps Script records the error message (for example "That puzzle is too big for one table") in our project's Google Cloud™ error log so we can fix bugs. These messages never contain your document text or your words, and Google deletes them automatically after its standard retention period.

How Google user data is shared

We do not share, sell, rent, transfer or disclose Google user data to anyone. Cluequill has no servers of ours to send it to. The only third party involved is Gumroad (api.gumroad.com): when you activate a Pro license key, the sidebar in your browser asks Gumroad whether the key is valid, and repeats that check about once a week. That request contains only the license key and the product ID, never any document content, puzzle words or Google account data.

How we protect your data

Least privilege. Cluequill requests the narrowest Docs scope Google offers (documents.currentonly) and no permission to reach the internet.
No copies, no servers. Puzzles are built in your browser and written by Google's Apps Script under your own account. Nothing reaches us, so there is no copy for us to lose or for anyone to breach.
Encryption. Google encrypts data moving between Google Docs™, Apps Script and its storage, in transit and at rest. The license check goes to Gumroad over HTTPS (TLS) only.
No human access. No person at Front Porch Puzzle Press can see your documents, words or license key.
Secure development. Cluequill contains no third-party trackers or analytics, loads no remote scripts, and is tested before each release.

Retention and deletion

Document content is never retained. Uninstalling Cluequill from Extensions > Add-ons > Manage add-ons and removing its access at myaccount.google.com/permissions stops all access at once. A saved license key stays in your own Google account's add-on storage, where only you can reach it; email us and we will walk you through clearing it. Because we hold no copy of your data, there is nothing on our side to delete.

Google API Services User Data Policy

Cluequill's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements. Google Workspace™ API data is not used to develop, improve or train generalized AI or machine-learning models.
