Scenequill: screenplay formatting for Google Docs™
Turn a Google Doc into a properly formatted screenplay in one click, switch elements from a sidebar, jump between scenes, and move scripts in and out with Fountain.
What it does
- Industry format (free): US Letter, Courier 12, a 1.5-inch left margin and the standard indents for every element. Scene headings, character names and transitions are capitalized for you.
- Element buttons (free): Scene heading, Action, Character, Parenthetical, Dialogue, Transition and Centered, with Next and New line buttons that work like Tab and Enter.
- Characters (free): names you've used appear as one-click buttons, and (CONT'D) is added or removed for you.
- Scene list (free): every scene in the sidebar; click one to jump to it. Plus a cast list and a page estimate.
- Fountain (free): paste a .fountain script to get a formatted document, or export yours to Fountain. Your script is never locked in.
- Pro: Final Draft (.fdx) export, a title page, scene numbers, and scene-length and character reports.
How it works
- Type or paste your script into a Google Doc. Put scene headings on their own line starting with INT. or EXT., and character names in capitals above their dialogue.
- Choose Extensions > Scenequill > Format whole script.
- Open the sidebar to fix any line with one click, jump between scenes, or import and export Fountain. Then use File > Download > PDF.
Free, or $19 once
Formatting, the element buttons, the scene list and Fountain import and export are free, with no line limit. Scenequill Pro adds .fdx export, a title page, scene numbers and reports for one payment of $19. No subscription. Paste the license key from your receipt into the sidebar to activate it.
Private by design
Scenequill can only see the document you're using it in, and your script never leaves Google Docs. The only outside request it makes is checking a Pro license key with Gumroad. Read the privacy policy and terms.
Questions & answers
How do I format a screenplay in Google Docs?
Install Scenequill, then choose Extensions > Scenequill > Format whole script. It sets US Letter pages, a 1.5-inch left margin, Courier 12 and the standard indents for scene headings, action, character names, parentheticals, dialogue and transitions, and capitalizes headings and names. Run it again any time you add more pages.
Can I switch elements like Tab and Enter in screenwriting software?
Yes. The sidebar has a button for each element, plus Next (like Tab), Back, and New line (like Enter), which adds the element that usually comes next: dialogue after a character name, action after dialogue. While the sidebar has focus, Tab, Shift+Tab, Enter and the keys 1 to 7 work too.
Does it work with Fountain?
Yes. Paste a .fountain script into the Fountain tab to get a formatted document, title page included, and export any script back to Fountain whenever you like. Fountain import and export are free.
Does it add (CONT'D) and (MORE)?
Update (CONT'D) adds (CONT'D) when a character keeps talking after an interruption in the same scene, and removes stale ones. Google Docs doesn't tell add-ons where its page breaks fall, so (MORE) at the bottom of a page isn't added; a .fdx export lets Final Draft handle that.
Is there a line or page limit?
No. Formatting, Fountain import and export, and the scene list work on scripts of any length.
What does Pro add?
Final Draft (.fdx) export, a title page, scene numbers, and reports with each scene's length in eighths of a page and each character's lines and words. It's $19, paid once.
