Scenequill Privacy Policy
Effective October 21, 2026
Scenequill is a Google Docs™ add-on that formats a document as a screenplay, switches lines between screenplay elements, lists scenes and characters, and imports and exports Fountain and Final Draft (.fdx) text. It runs entirely inside Google Apps Script under your Google account. Front Porch Puzzle Press, which makes Scenequill, has no servers for it and no user accounts, and never receives your document content.
1. Google user data Scenequill accesses
Scenequill requests three Google OAuth scopes and nothing else:
- View and manage the document the add-on is installed in (
documents.currentonly): the text, paragraph layout (indents, alignment, spacing), text formatting (bold, italic, underline, font), page size and margins, and the add-on's own invisible named ranges in only the Google Doc you have open and are using Scenequill in. It cannot see any other document, file, folder, email or contact. - Display and run third-party web content in prompts and sidebars (
script.container.ui): used only to show Scenequill's own menu and sidebar inside Google Docs. No user data is accessed through it. - Connect to an external service (
script.external_request): used only to send a Scenequill Pro license key to Gumroad's license API (api.gumroad.com) to confirm it is valid. No document content and no Google user data is ever sent through it. The add-on's manifest allows no other address.
Scenequill does not access your name, email address, profile, Google Drive files or any other Google account data.
2. How Scenequill uses Google user data
Scenequill reads and changes the open document only when you choose a command, and only to carry out that command: deciding which screenplay element each line is, setting the screenplay layout, font and page size, capitalizing scene headings, character names and transitions, adding or removing (CONT'D), inserting new lines, listing scenes and characters in the sidebar and moving the cursor to a scene, counting scene lengths, adding a title page or scene numbers, turning pasted Fountain text into a formatted script, and turning the script into Fountain or .fdx text shown in the sidebar for you to copy or download. Document content is processed inside Google Apps Script in your own account and is never sent to Front Porch Puzzle Press, Gumroad or any other party.
Scenequill does not use Google user data for advertising, analytics, profiling, credit or lending decisions, or to train artificial-intelligence or machine-learning models. It is never sold, and it is never transferred to anyone except as required by law. Scenequill's use and transfer of information received from Google APIs adheres to the Google API Services User Data Policy, including the Limited Use requirements.
3. How data is stored and protected
- In your document: the formatting and text changes you ask for, and a few invisible named ranges called "scenequill:<element>" that remember the element you chose for a line the add-on could not otherwise tell apart (for example a scene heading that doesn't start with INT. or EXT.). These are protected by the document's normal Google sharing permissions.
- In your Google account's add-on storage (Apps Script User Properties): your preferences (font, whether to remove empty lines, the import mode) and, if you bought Scenequill Pro, your license key and the date it was last checked. This storage is private to your Google account; Front Porch Puzzle Press cannot read it.
- Exports: Fountain and .fdx files are built in the sidebar in your browser and saved only where you choose to save them.
- In transit: all traffic stays inside Google's infrastructure, except the license check, which is sent to Gumroad only over encrypted HTTPS (TLS).
- Front Porch Puzzle Press keeps no copy of any document or Google user data on any server, database, log or backup, so there is nothing of yours held by us that could be breached.
4. Data retention and deletion
- Document content is never retained by Scenequill outside your document; it exists only for the moment a command runs.
- Formatting, title pages, scene numbers and named ranges stay in the document until you change or delete them, or delete the document. Edit > Undo and File > Version history reverse any change.
- Preferences and a license key stay in your account's add-on storage until you remove Scenequill. To delete all of it: uninstall Scenequill from Extensions > Add-ons > Manage add-ons, then revoke its access at myaccount.google.com/connections. Removing access stops Scenequill from reading any document.
- If a license key fails a check (for example after a refund), Scenequill deletes it from storage automatically.
- You can email hello@frontporchpuzzlepress.com to ask about or request deletion of any data; since we hold no Google user data, there is normally nothing on our side to delete, and we will confirm that within 30 days.
5. Purchases
Scenequill Pro is sold through Gumroad, our payment provider. When you activate a license, and about once a week after, the add-on sends only the license key to Gumroad to confirm it. Gumroad's own privacy policy covers your purchase and payment details; Scenequill never sees them.
6. Changes
If this policy changes, the new version will be posted on this page with a new effective date.
