March Activities for Seniors: Calendar Ideas & Printables

March is the month the light comes back. The days get longer, the first bulbs push up, and residents start asking when they can sit outside again. It is also a busy month in 2027, because Easter comes early and lands at the end of March. These March activity ideas are for activity directors in nursing homes, assisted living and memory care, senior center staff and family caregivers.

What's on the calendar in March 2027

March is Women's History Month. The dated events:

  • Sunday, March 14: daylight saving time begins; clocks go forward one hour.
  • Wednesday, March 17: St. Patrick's Day.
  • Sunday, March 21: Palm Sunday.
  • Friday, March 26: Good Friday.
  • Sunday, March 28: Easter Sunday.

The first day of spring also falls in March. With Easter on Sunday, March 28, plan the Easter party and spring decorations for the last week of the month rather than April. Our free activity calendar template has a blank version you can fill in.

St. Patrick's Day activities for seniors

  • A wearing of the green. Everyone wears something green, and residents vote for the best hat, tie or brooch.
  • An Irish song sing-along. Old ballads and pub songs that many residents know by heart. Large print song sheets help those who want to read along.
  • Lucky memories. Ask about lucky charms, four-leaf clovers, a lucky break in life, or the family's own stories of coming to America.
  • A shamrock word search or scramble. Our St. Patrick's Day puzzle book and the March packet below both have one.
  • Green treats and tea. A small party with a green treat and a pot of tea. Check diets and swallowing plans first.

Spring and Easter ideas

  • Start seeds on the windowsill. Egg cartons, potting soil and easy seeds like beans or marigolds. Residents can check on them every day. Our gardening activities guide has more.
  • Spring cleaning memories. Beating rugs, airing out the house, the smell of the clothesline. Bring a clothespin bag to pass around.
  • Easter bonnet show. Decorate hats with silk flowers and ribbon, then hold a gentle parade around the room.
  • Egg decorating. Plastic or wooden eggs with stickers and markers are easier for stiff hands than dyeing real ones.
  • Easter memories. Sunday best clothes, family dinners, sunrise services and egg hunts. Not everyone celebrates Easter, so build part of the week around spring itself.

Women's History Month

Turn the spotlight on the women in the building. Collect stories of first jobs, wartime work, raising a family, running a farm or a business. A "Women Who Shaped Us" wall with a photo and one sentence about a mother, grandmother or teacher invites men and women alike to take part. Keep it about residents' own lives, and they will supply the history.

A sample March week

  • Monday: seed starting; puzzle table with coffee.
  • Tuesday: trivia hour in teams; Women Who Shaped Us story collecting.
  • Wednesday: St. Patrick's sing-along and wearing of the green.
  • Thursday: spring cleaning memories; coloring hour.
  • Friday: bingo; a classic movie with popcorn.

The clock change can leave some residents tired or out of sorts for a few days. Keep that week's calendar calm and familiar.

One-to-one and in-room ideas

  • A March puzzle folder: a St. Patrick's word search, a short trivia page and a spring coloring page.
  • A pot of bulbs: bring a potted daffodil or hyacinth to look at and talk about gardens past.
  • A window visit: look for the first signs of spring together and keep a list.
  • Letters home: write an Easter or spring note to family as the resident dictates.

Adapt March activities for dementia

  • Use the senses. The smell of potting soil, the feel of a soft green scarf, a familiar Irish tune.
  • Keep the routine steady around the clock change and the busy Easter week.
  • No quizzing. "Did your mother wear a hat to church?" works better than a question with one right answer.
  • Use easy pages. Our easy March packet for memory care has 9 x 9 word searches, word banks and two-choice trivia in extra large print.

Our dementia activities guide has more, and the easy printable puzzles are free.

Newsletter corner

For March, try a Women Who Shaped Us column, a resident's spring garden memory, a St. Patrick's word search and the posted calendar. See our senior newsletter ideas and the free puzzles for senior center newsletters.

A ready-made March packet

Our March large print activity packet has 21 pages: a 4-week calendar for March 2027, three word searches, a crossword, a word scramble, a 20-question trivia hour with every answer checked against published sources, conversation cards and a "Spring Memory Flowers" group activity, all reproducible for your facility. The winter bundle covers January to March. More tools are on the activity directors page.
