February Activities for Seniors: Calendar Ideas & Printables
February is the shortest month, but in many communities it feels like the longest. The holidays are long gone, spring is still weeks away, and bad weather cancels outings. A good February calendar leans on warmth: love stories, friendship, music and small treats to look forward to. These February activity ideas are for activity directors in nursing homes, assisted living and memory care, senior center staff and family caregivers.
What's on the calendar in February 2027
February is Black History Month. The dated events:
- Tuesday, February 2: Groundhog Day.
- Tuesday, February 9: Mardi Gras.
- Wednesday, February 10: Ash Wednesday, the start of Lent.
- Sunday, February 14: Valentine's Day.
- Monday, February 15: Presidents' Day.
Valentine's Day falls on a Sunday in 2027, so many communities will hold the party on Friday, February 12, when more staff and volunteers are in the building. Our free activity calendar template has a blank version you can fill in with the ideas below.
Valentine's Day activities for seniors
- How We Met. Invite residents to tell how they met a husband, wife or sweetheart. Write each story on a card and post it with a wedding photo, if families can lend one. This is often the most-read wall in the building all month.
- Valentine card-making. Red and pink card stock, doilies, stickers and felt-tip pens. Send the cards to staff, a school, a hospital floor or residents who don't get much mail.
- A love song hour. Play the songs people danced to when they were courting and let the room sing along. Ask for requests a week ahead so you have the right records ready.
- A valentine mail route. Residents address valentines to each other and a volunteer "mail carrier" delivers them on the day. Make sure every resident gets at least one.
- Valentine word games. A large print word search, a scramble of love-song words, or "Finish the Saying" with old sweetheart sayings.
Groundhog Day and winter fun
- Six more weeks? Let residents vote on whether winter will last, post the tally, and check back in March.
- Winter memories. Snow days, sledding hills, ice skating on the pond, the coal or wood stove at home.
- Winter word searches. Our free winter word search printables work all month.
- A seed catalog afternoon. Planning a spring windowsill garden is a hopeful thing to do in February. See our gardening activities guide.
Presidents' Day
Keep Presidents' Day about memories, not today's politics. Ask about the first time residents voted, a campaign button they kept, or a speech they heard on the radio or saw on television. A "president for a day" conversation ("What's the first thing you would change?") draws out opinions in a friendly way. Our patriotic activities guide has more ideas for flag and holiday programs.
Black History Month
Many residents lived through the civil rights years, and some have their own stories to tell. Invite a speaker from a local library, church or historical society, hold a gospel or jazz listening hour with residents choosing the songs, or start a book discussion with a short read-aloud. Give people a chance to share memories, and never press anyone who would rather listen.
A sample February week
- Monday: How We Met story collecting; puzzle table with coffee.
- Tuesday: valentine card-making; trivia hour in teams.
- Wednesday: winter word search; love song hour.
- Thursday: Remember When conversation cards; a visiting speaker or choir.
- Friday: bingo; a classic movie with popcorn.
Keep one quiet choice every day, such as a puzzle table, coloring or a reading corner, and hold each activity at the same time each week so residents can count on it.
One-to-one and in-room ideas
- A February puzzle folder: a large print word search, a few trivia questions and a coloring page, swapped out weekly.
- A valentine visit: bring a card for the resident to sign and send to someone they love.
- Old photos: look through a wedding album or family photos together and ask about the day.
- A song on request: play a favorite from their twenties during the visit.
Adapt February activities for dementia
- Keep it familiar. Love songs, old valentines and family photos work better than new games with rules.
- No quizzing. Ask "Did you have a sweetheart in school?" instead of questions with one right answer.
- Be gentle about loss. Valentine's Day can be hard for residents who have lost a spouse. Make room for memories of parents, children and friends, too.
- Use easy pages. Our easy February packet for memory care has 9 x 9 word searches, word banks and two-choice trivia in extra large print.
Our dementia activities guide has more, and the easy printable puzzles are free.
Newsletter corner
February newsletters almost write themselves: a How We Met story (with permission), the month's birthdays, a valentine word search and the posted calendar. See our senior newsletter ideas and the offer of free puzzles for senior center newsletters.
A ready-made February packet
If you would rather not build the month yourself, our February large print activity packet has 21 pages: a 4-week calendar for February 2027, three word searches, a crossword, a word scramble, a 20-question trivia hour with every answer checked against published sources, conversation cards and a "Hearts Full of Love" group activity, all reproducible for your facility. The winter bundle covers January, February and March together. More tools are on the activity directors page.
Last month: January activities for seniors. Next month: March activities for seniors.
